Our situation is this: most of the people in this world believe that the Creator of the universe has written a book. We have the misfortune of having many such books on hand, each making an exclusive claim as to its infallibility. People tend to organize themselves into factions according to which of these incompatible claims they accept—rather than on the basis of language, skin color, location of birth, or any other criterion of tribalism. Each of these texts urges its readers to adopt a variety of beliefs and practices, some of which are benign, many of which are not. All are in perverse agreement on one point of fundamental importance, however: "respect" for other faiths, or for the views of unbelievers, is not an attitude that God endorses. While all faiths have been touched, here and there, by the spirit of ecumenicalism, the central tenet of every religious tradition is that all others are mere repositories of error or, at best, dangerously incomplete. Once a person believes—really believes—that certain ideas can lead to eternal happiness, or to its antithesis, he cannot tolerate the possibility that the people he loves might be led astray by the blandishments of unbelievers. Atheists and Spirituality

I believe, it is healthy to understand one religion in the context of other religions; and so it is equally healthy to talk about religions in the context of atheism. This approach should not be regarded as means of rating these entities in terms of their superiority or inferiority.
Atheism for that reason should not be viewed an anti religious ideology to rob religion of it virtues. In fact atheism adds a new dimension to one’s faculty of critical thinking and reasoning – if one desires so.
Atheism is often regarded as devoid of spiritual values which are also not the case. There are no dogmas “Thou Shalt” or Thou Shalt Not” in atheism. Some do nurture spiritual values while some do not

YUSUFALI: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).

What to make out of a nation that ......

What do we make out of a nation that glorifies a guard who shoots at a defenseless person from behind his back, whereas the guard had assumed the responsibility of protecting the person in the first place?

The guard did it for the love of the Prophet of course.
And the nation calls the guard a "Ghazi" a highest honor that can be bestowed upon someone who kills an enemy of Islam.
